C/1-506 IN Former Commander's Biography

William JonesCPT Jones enlisted in the Maryland Army National Guard in 1989 and entered active duty in 1991. His first assignment was to the Republic of Panama where he served in the 5th Battalion of the 87th Infantry (Jungle Fighters) as an Assistant Machine Gunner, M203 Grenadier, Radio Operator, Squad Automatic Weapon Gunner, Team Leader and Rifle Squad leader from 1991 to 1994. From 1994 to 1996, he served in the 4th Ranger Training Battalion's (RTB) Opposing Forces Platoon as an M60 Machine Gunner, Team Leader and Weapons Squad Leader at Fort Benning, GA. As a SSG he served in Alpha Company, 4th RTB, as a Ranger Instructor (RI) from 1996 to 1998.

During this period he attended night school and earned his Associate Degree and was accepted into the Army's Officer Candidate School. In 1999 CPT Jones was commissioned as 2LT in the Infantry. From 1999 to 2000 he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader with Bravo Company 4th Battalion of the 31st Infantry Regiment of the Historical 10th Mountain Infantry Division (Light), including a deployment to Bosnia.

CPT Jones entered the Degree Completion Program in 2000 and graduated from Empire State College, SUNY in 2001. He served as a Company XO in Charlie Company 4th Battalion 31st IN from 2001 to 2002, including a deployment to Afghanistan. In 2002 he was assigned again to Ft Benning to attend the Infantry Captain's Career Course. In 2003 he was assigned to the Legendary 1st Battalion of the 506th Infantry Regiment Air Assault (The Band of Brothers). CPT Jones served as the Battalion Adjutant from October 2003 to April 2004. From April 2004 to November 2004, he served as the Company Commander of Charlie Company (Hard Rock) 1-506th IN in both South Korea and a subsequent deployment to Iraq.

Captain Jones has served in Panama, Honduras, Bosnia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Korea, Kuwait, and Iraq. His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, United Nations Medal, Korean Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom Expeditionary Medal, and Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal. He has been awarded Air Assault Wings, the coveted Ranger Tab, Airborne Wings, Expert Infantryman's Badge, and Combat Infantryman's Badge.

CPT Jones has attended the Army's Basic Training, Infantry Advance Individual Training, Combat Life Saver Course, Air Assault School, Jungle Operation Training Course, Ranger School, The Light Fighters Course, the Primary Leadership Development Course, Airborne School, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer's Course, Instructor Trainer Course, Tactical Combat Course, Officer Candidate School, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Captain's Career Course, Close Quarters Combat Course, Mechanized Leader's Course, and the Combat Arms Service and Support School.

CPT William Jones married Suzanne Crockett-Jones in October 1991 and they have three children: Noah (10), Asher (8), and Maggie (4). He was born in Baltimore City and currently resides in Bel Air. He was wounded in Iraq in November 2004 and has been recovering from his multiple wounds in Bel Air with the help of his family and friends.
