Sapper Newsletter (Nov 04)

The Sappers of C/44th Engineer Battalion proudly joined the ranks of the Currahees of Task Force 1-506th Infantry (AASLT) upon arrival to Camp Habbaniyah, Iraq this past August. Executing combat engineer tasks during tactical missions and the daily operation and improvements to the camp are our primary missions in support of the task force. Our Sappers have worked side-by-side with our Infantry brethren on every cordon and search, raid, and TCP conducted by the battalion since its arrival into country. Additionally, we've conducted numerous Sapper cache sweep operations as an engineer company with infantry security support. These sweep missions have produced some of the largest caches seized by the entire brigade and have included countless weapons, munitions, and IEDs positioned by insurgents for future use. Finding and securing these items have prevented the enemy from using these against our soldiers as they conduct daily patrols and movement through our battle space. Recently, our company attached a platoon of Sappers to the 3rd Light Armor Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion from the Marines for OPERATION PHANTOM FURY, the assault on Fallujah. Our men were the lead element for the initial assault with missions to obstacle both bridges spanning the Euphrates River into the city, while also locating and disabling any IEDs emplaced on the near sides of those bridges. They quickly accomplished both tasks to prevent any movement in or out of the city in the west and then provided heavy equipment support to dig fighting positions for maneuver forces to use in the fight. We also recently attached a platoon of Sappers to Task Force 1-503rd Infantry (AASLT) to operate vicinity the city of Ramadi. They have continued the outstanding engineer work they performed while with us at Camp Habbaniyah and have distinguished themselves on numerous occasions since moving from our camp. Two NCOs from the platoon, SSG Jasper and SGT Widger, are each being recommended for the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for their actions disabling an IED that was emplaced to blow up a children's school in the city. We are extremely proud of their actions and of the actions of all of our men in the missions they execute daily.
