Gator Newsletter (Feb 05)

January was a productive month for 3rd Platoon and all soldiers serving in Iraq. As I'm sure most of you know, January 30th was Iraq's first free democratic election, and it was a huge success. Even in the middle of the Sunni Triangle, where doubt was high, the friendly voters of Habbaniyah put on their Sunday best and moved to the polls. Our company was tasked to secure one of the two schools that was selected to be a polling location.

Our first brave soul was coerced by SSG Pak and escorted by PFC Doleys. By the end of the day, we had 65 voters successfully take part in shaping their country's future. Many people might think 65 voters is not much; however, in the eyes of our enemy, one vote means that we win.

You should be extremely proud of your soldiers. Under adverse conditions, with a cowardly but dangerous enemy, Gator Company made history that will change the world and give millions of people a life they never had – a life of freedom.

We celebrated three birthdays too. SGT Robinson had a birthday on January 6th, PV2 Schulte's birthday was January 8th, and PFC Thirakoune turned 25 on January 12th. Finally, we were awarded our Combat Infantryman's Badges (CIBs). It is our most prestigious Infantry award symbolizing the bravery and infinite endurance a man must have to endure during combat on the ground.
