Sapper Newsletter (Feb 05)
January was dominated by the Iraqi elections and all of the preparations necessary to ensure they would be able to be conducted safely for all citizens in our area of operations. The company was part of a number of raid missions at the beginning of the month that targeted individuals responsible for many IEDs in our area, effectively taking them off the streets and increasing the overall security of the greater Khalidyah area. Following these raids, the company shifted focus toward improving the security and infrastructure of Camp Habbaniyah with numerous projects conducted over the span of a week and a half. Although not the sexiest work, thousands of meters of concertina wire were strung, trees and obstructions cleared around the camp perimeter, and ranges built to keep marksmanship skills sharp. We also conducted a series of company cache sweep missions leading up to the elections to ensure local insurgents weren't stockpiling weapons and munitions for attacks on our polling sites. The company's main focus, however, was the set up and hardening of polling sites in the Khalidyah area to allow voting to take place safely and efficiently. We were also responsible for the security in the areas around one of the polling sites in the task force area on election day itself. 1st Platoon, still working with TF 1-503rd IN in Ramadi, played a vital role in the planning for site security and set up for all polling stations manned by their task force and were also a critical security asset on election day. Although we didn't experience a high voter turnout, our hard work ensured that all Iraqi residents were at least given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. Furthermore, we helped prevent any catastrophic incidents from occurring and experienced very little activity from insurgents due to the high security posture we assisted in creating. Now, the lofty task at hand is to assist with the training of the Iraqi Security Forces to allow them to take responsibility for the safety and security of their nation.
