Sapper Newsletter (Jun 05)
May was exceptionally busy for the company as we balanced a steady stream of task force missions, company missions, construction projects on multiple camps and task force quick reaction force (QRF) responsibilities throughout the month. The return of thousand degree blinding heat was greatly enjoyed by all on long missions. Between missions and projects, the company received the welcome news of redeployment dates and the key milestones that will bring us to that joyous time. Amidst the grind of daily activities, lists are now being generated, non-essential equipment packed, and numerous other preparations made to posture the company to deploy to Fort Carson later this summer. Visible progress was definitely being made when the advance party for the company departed Iraq at the end of the month and arrived safely at Fort Carson to begin the process of preparing living and storage space for the remainder of the unit. We've placed our trust in the sage wisdom of SSG Khaekon, SPC(P) Malley, and SPC Kondus to find a new hill to perch the company headquarters on, and random rocks to ring the buildings with, in honor of our beloved confines at Camp Howze. Charlie Company also welcomed Captain Steve Kreh, the incoming commander, to Camp Habbaniyah in the middle of the month to begin change of command inventories and the official handover with yours truly. Our change of command is scheduled for 22 June at sunny Camp Habbaniyah. Since CPT Kreh will have the honors of writing the newsletter blurb next month, I'd like to take a brief moment to say that my 20 months with the Sappers of Charlie Rock have been an incredible experience that I will sadly miss. It's truly been an honor and a pleasure to have had the opportunity to serve with some of the Army's finest and hardest working Soldiers and leaders. They have been an outstanding unit of professionals and I couldn't be prouder to say that I was their leader.
