BAGHDAD, June 1, 2006 - Iraqi soldiers foiled a possible kidnapping May 29 north of Baghdad when four terrorists passed through a checkpoint with two bound hostages in the rear of their vehicle. Soldiers from 2nd Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, became suspicious when they noticed the passengers carrying weapons. The soldiers searched the vehicle and freed the two hostages. The suspects were taken into custody for questioning. In a separate incident, Iraqi police in the town of Fufa discovered unexploded ordnance behind a wall 50 meters from the Kufa mosque. The Iraqi police discovered 13 mortar rounds with wires protruding from them. The police reported the find to the Iraqi army and an explosive ordnance disposal team took possession of the explosives. Also, an Iraqi civilian stopped soldiers from 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division and directed them to a weapons cache north of Baghdad May 28. Iraqi soldiers arrived and discovered three 122 mm artillery rocket shells. The owner of the house was detained for questioning. The weapons were recovered and disposed of by Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal teams. Coalition forces also detained two suspected terrorists, and located and destroyed two bomb-making caches. The terrorists, detained by 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, were acting suspiciously when the patrol passed their house southwest of Baghdad. A search of their house turned up three assault rifles, a machine gun, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, RPG rounds, rifle ammunition and a sighting scope. The two bomb-making caches contained 66 artillery and mortar rounds. |
