I have found a great website that offers further information about the CIB for DMZ service. This website contains info on requesting records, addresses, and good DOPE on how the process works. Additionally the website contains the SOP on how DMZ vets can apply for the Korean Defense Service Medal, and Cold War recognition certificate that they are entitled to. The website is Korea Defense Veterans of America, and I strongly suggest all Korea Currahees, as well as all Cold War Currahees take a good look.
Korea Defense Service Medal: established by Section 543 of the 2003 National Defense Authorization Act;
signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 2, 2002; awarded for qualifying service on or after July 28, 1954.From Manny Seck (C Co, 1st BN, 506th, Nov 89-May 90):
A lot of guys are interested in applying for the Korea Defense Service Medal, which our time in Korea qualifies us for, but are not exactly sure what the SOP is on requesting it. Form DD-0149 is required to request the medal, and it has the mailing address as to where to send the completed form, and any documentation proving service in Korea. If the guys would prefer to fax the paperwork, the number is 1-703-607-2036, or 1-314-592-0533. As of 10/08/09, I am still waiting for my medal, so I don't know how long the process takes.506th Update: October 1987 article by MAJ Robert Boyko [HHC (Adjutant), 1st BN, 1987-1988]
