HHC
Camp Greaves, 1990

photos by Jerry Metz (HHC, 1st BN, 1989-1991)
Barracks

This photo was taken looking east while standing on the hilltop
where the PX and swimming pool were located.

(L-R): HHC, 1-506th mess hall; barracks for the support
platoon
and medics; and HHC, 1-506th barracks.

From his room (bottom floor, second room from the left), Jerry
could clearly hear the North Korean loud speakers located
across the DMZ in Kichong-dong (Propaganda Village)

Currahee Mountain, DMZ Korea

"Currahee Mountain" as viewed from HHC, 1-506th barracks, looking north.
The football/baseball field is in the foreground, and the motorpool is just beyond.
Jerry was a Currahee "Wrench," a mechanic down in the "motor hole" motorpool,
which had over 100 trucks and only five mechanics to maintain a 90% operating status.

This South Korea Currahee Mountain sits partially in the southern boundary of the
DMZ. The northward slope is bisected, but the very top is not actually in the DMZ.
The mountain is about a mile and a half to the north of Camp Greaves and is accessible
only by a single road, barely visible to the far left in the photo. It was a common occur-
rence for the commander to take a battalion run to the top; the last leg of the hill goes
nearly straight up!

There is some kind of radar site on top of Currahee Mountain, but it is mostly a big
tourist attraction on the "DMZ tour," with a lookout and observatory at the tourist
center on the top.
