Sergeant Jeremy R. Summers was laid to rest at Battle Grove
Cemetery with full military honors on Friday, July 29, 2011.
Family, friends, fellow Soldiers, and citizens of Cynthiana bade
a fond and honorable farewell to this beloved son. Chaplain (Captain)
Bryan Smith delivered the eulogy to the packed funeral parlor,
remembering Sergeant Summers' dedication, bravery, and selfless
service. After the chaplain's remarks at the gravesite, a 3-volley
salute and the playing of taps, bagpiper and Vietnam veteran
Chris Paul piped Amazing Grace. Brigadier General Jeffrey N.
Colt [Deputy Commanding General (Support), 101st Airborne Division
(Air Assault)] then presented Sergeant Summers' parents, Mike
and Laura Jo Summers the US Flag that draped Sergeant Summers'
casket. Following General Colt, Lieutenant Colonel Kim Chaney,
former Currahee Adjutant (2004-2007), presented the Currahee
Battle Flag to Mr. and Mrs. Summers on behalf of the 506th
Airborne Infantry Regiment Association (Airmobile-Air Assault).
With flags in hand, the Summers family paid their last respects,
leaving long-stemmed red roses near Sergeant Summers' casket
as they returned to the processional vehicles.

The town of Cynthiana turned out en masse to honor
SGT Summers and stand
with his family in their time of grief. The streets were lined
with US Flags every
hundred feet on both sides of the nearly 1.5 mile route from
Ware Funeral Home
to Battle Grove Ceremony. |
