Fred May (A/1-506th XO) was in charge of the monument
construction project in Vietnam. Using a few photos Fred
had taken of the original monument, he and his son-in-law
Nelson Ortiz, deciphered the wording on the monument
using Nelson's computer imaging skills. Fred was able to
determine measurements for the replica based on the size of
the CIB in the photos of the original monument. Then Fred's
wife Sabina drew architectural plans for the monument using
this provided information.

Using those plans, Ken Parr (A/1-506th, 1970-1971), in above
photo (who built the original monument at Camp Evans, I Corps,
Vietnam in 1971), began work, in his garage, on a form to use to
build the replica.

Form
The pedestal of the monument replica was built much
longer than that of the original in Vietnam because
this pedestal was designed to be buried 40 inches
into the ground at Fort Campbell, KY.

Bauer & Knapp

Friends of Ken Parr helped with building the forms and pouring the cement.

Dave Bauer (Navy Vietnam veteran) and (Front): Jim Knapp (Army Vietnam veteran)

Upright Form

Setting the form upright in preparation for pouring the concrete

Concrete Vibrator

A concrete vibrator was used to remove air pockets in the concrete.

Smoothing the Top

Smoothing out the top of the monument

Front-Loader Tractor

After the concrete had cured, a front-loader tractor was used to lay
the unit down so that the form could be removed from the monument.

Platform

The monument was secured to a platform, constructed by Ken.

Into the Pickup
The front-loader tractor was also used to load the monument/platform onto a pickup provided by
Matt Link (L), so all could be safely transported over 500 miles from Crestline to Fort Campbell.
