KIA Telegram

On April 12, 1945, as members of Able Company were returning to the American
side of the Rhine from Himmelgeist, Germany, seven of them were drowned when
two of the boats they were in were overturned by a close German artillery round:

PFC Alfred G. Corgan
SGT Nick Demkowicz
PVT Harold E. Howard
PVT James M. Lovett, Sr.
PFC Robert E. Morneweck

MG James A. Ulio was The Adjutant General of the US Army.

April 12, 1945 was a significant date back in the States because it was the day
that President Franklin D. Roosevelt died.





The following letter was written to Robert's sister Virginia on June 30, 1945,
at Berchesgarten, Germany by Raymond C. Bascom (A Co, 1st BN, 506th PIR):

Emma Fransen Heynens
In 1945, Emma Fransen Heynens, a school teacher from Limburg
(The Netherlands) adopted the grave of PFC Robert E. Morneweck
in the Netherlands American Cemetery at Margraten. She cared for the
grave until she died in April 2005.
