In late November 1942, with the "A" Stage training
behind them, the 506th was ordered to Fort Benning for parachute
training. In December, the 3rd Battalion boarded trains for the
trip from Camp Toccoa to Atlanta (Fort McPherson), from where
they marched for the remainder of the trip to Benning, a distance
of 136 miles, setting a new world's record for an endurance march,
previously held by the Japanese Army. Regimental Headquarters
also marched from Atlanta to Fort Benning with the 3rd Battalion.
NOTE: please contact Hoyt
Bruce Moore, III if you can identify any of the G Company
paratroopers in the following photos.
