Framed with Ike's D-Day Letter Members of Easy Company, the "Band Of Brothers", of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in Ste. Marie-du-Mont, June 7, 1944. The Screaming Eagles were photographed with GI's of the 4th Infantry Division who had come ashore at Utah Beach on D-Day. The photograph was taken by Easy Company member Walter Gordon, using a camera belonging to Forrest Guth (front row, far left). The photograph is autographed in black marker by Guth. The six Easy paratroopers in the photo are (from left): Forrest Guth, Frank Mellet, David Morris, Daniel West, Floyd Talbert, and C.T Smith. Gordon, Guth , Talbert and another E Company paratrooper, John Eubanks, linked up after their jump into Normandy. They spent June 6 defending a crossroads by Utah Beach. This photograph was taken the next day as the Screaming Eagles moved into Ste. Marie-du-Mont after the Germans pulled out. The artwork also features authentic reproduction Screaming Eagle shoulder patch, Jump Wings, and a copy of Ike's original D-Day message: "Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you..." The letter has been copied from an original in our collection. The finished piece measures 12 3/4" x 25 1/2". It is matted in a dark olive green, with a lower light green mat upon which the 101st Patch and Jump Wings are mounted. The frame is black metal. |

At 2200 hours on June 5, 1944, 13,400 paratroopers of the United States 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions began loading into 822 C-47 Dakota transport planes prior to taking off for Normandy and the invasion of Occupied France. As the armada of transports reached the Cotentin coastline, they ran into a thick cloud bank which caused incredible confusion among the transports. Fearful of a midair collision with one of the hundreds of other aircraft in the zero-visibility night sky, the C-47 pilots separated from the tight formations they had been flying in. As each plane emerged from the cloud bank, many realized they were now off course and suddenly in a different world. A bright moon shone on them as they exited the clouds, and down below in the Norman countryside, hundreds of machine gun tracers and flak shells rose to meet them. The time was shortly after 0100, June 6, 1944, D-Day. It is this point in time that is portrayed in the art print Tonight Is The Night Of Nights by Dan Zoernig. A paratrooper of the 506th PIR Easy Company stands at the door of his C-47, awaiting the green light to jump. Readers and viewers of Stephen Ambroses Band of Brothers will notice that the C-47 in the foreground has the number 67 stenciled on the side the number of the plane in which Easy Companys Lt. Richard Winters was the jumpmaster. The framed print measures 26 x 22. The frame is solid wood with a cherry finish. The print is double-matted with a medium gray-blue mat on top, and a medium gray-green mat underneath. Below the print are three patches that are relevant to the subject. |
